IN A NUTSHELL
WHAT: Capital city of Bavaria and major German tourist destination
WHERE:
Southeastern Germany, near Austria and the Alps
WHY: That most "German" of German cities
WHEN: Any time of year, but Oktoberfest is always a highlight
HOW: International flights into Franz Joseph Strauß International Airport, or via train from other European destinations

Munich (München) is well known for its Oktoberfest festivities and for its delicious yeast-wheat beers (Hefeweizen).  But the capital of Bavaria has much to offer tourists not just in October, but all year round.

While Munich is a large, cosmopolitan city with a population of over a million people, the city center has the feel of a small village.  The pedestrian area plays host to cafes and markets, while the parks offer visitors and residents an escape from the city scene.

When foreigners think of Germany, they usually picture beer halls, oompah bands, and lederhosen.  All of these traditional sights and sounds are found in Munich and the surrounding Bavarian countryside.

Munich lies at the doorstep to the Alps and is the gateway to the German state of Bavaria.  Munich has castles, festivals, and everything in between.  If there is one city in Germany you should visit, visit this one!
