Valletta, the capital of Malta, is a relaxed city of narrow, steep streets.  The city is surrounded on three sides by water and massive fortifications dating to its days as the home of the Knights of the Order of St. John.

In 1565, 700 knights and 8000 locals survived an invasion and held off a seige by 30,000 Turks.  As a reward for their bravery, the King Philip of Spain and Pope Pius V built the city of Valletta for the knights and the Maltese people so that they could more easily defend the island.  As a result  Valletta is perched high atop a hill between the two deep water ports of Marsamxett and Grand Harbour.

A visit to Valletta must include a trip to the public gardens, from which visitors can see spectacular views across the Grand Harbour.
