Parque das Nações, on the northeastern edge of Lisbon, was built for the 1998 World Expo.  The extensive grounds lay on the banks of the Tagus and house a large shopping mall, cable car ride over the grounds, and many new office and residential buildings.  The real reasons to go there as a tourist, however, are to visit the massive Lisbon Oceanarium (one of the largest aquariums in the world and the largest in Europe) and to enjoy a meal at one of the many cafes and restaurants that lie in a long line along the river.

The Oceanarium, built in 1996, is the centerpiece of the Parque das Nações.  The aquarium features a gigantic central tank which displays everything from large ocean sharks to reef sharks to large and small fish in one integrated ocean biosphere.  The Oceanarium is a fantastic respite from the hustle and bustle of central Lisbon, and is only a short train ride away from downtown.
