Valletta, the capital of Malta, is a relaxed city of narrow, steep streets.� The city is surrounded on three sides by water and massive fortifications dating to its days as the home of the Knights of the Order of St. John.�

In 1565, 700 knights and 8000 locals survived an invasion and held off a seige by 30,000 Turks.� As a reward for their bravery, the King Philip of Spain and Pope Pius V built the city of Valletta for the knights and the Maltese people so that they could more easily defend the island.� As a result� Valletta is perched high atop a hill between the two deep water ports of Marsamxett and Grand Harbour.�

A visit to Valletta must include a trip to the public gardens, from which visitors can see spectacular views across the Grand Harbour.
